Per Mertesacker believes the return of some leading players from injury will give Arsenal the edge for the race for a top four finish

Per Mertesacker believes the return of some leading players from injury will give Arsenal the edge for the race for a top four finish.

"We need these moments where you can see we've got great players and some great finishers with Lukas Podolski on the scoresheet and Aaron Ramsey back on track, Mesut back on track," Mertesacker told the club's official website. "All these players could make a difference.

Ramsey's back and scoring again
"When you have your whole squad together for as long as possible, that can make a difference. We suffered a bit in the second part of the season but now everyone is coming back to full fitness. We've had some long-term injuries and it's good to have them all back."

"We have the potential to be a very promising side in terms of title races, but if you can't keep your leading players fit all the time it makes it a lot more difficult.

"We are determined to keep fourth position."

"I think at the start, Hull played very well, they put pressure on us all the time," Mertesacker added. "They played with two strikers (Nikica) Jelavic and (Shane) Long. They played quite decent together as well so it was quite tough.

"We were lucky [at times] but overall when it was really, really close we had a good response.

"I think the whole team has to switch on quicker than normal to avoid those balls behind us [when we face two strikers]. I got booked very early so I always had to be aware.

"To cover each other is a vital point. We didn't do enough of that in the first 15 or 20 minutes but after it was much easier, especially in the second half, we got more possession, we were more dangerous and we've got some decent finishers in our team as well.

"That made it much easier in the second half to have better possession and play all the way through. We didn't lose a lot of balls in the middle of the park, that's what hurts us a lot. But we avoided that."

Lukas Podolski says missing out on top four will be disaster for Arsenal

15th April 2014 by ArsenalSupremo

Lukas Podolski spoke ahead of Tuesday's Premier League clash with West Ham United and insists that it will be a disaster if Arsenal fail to qualify for the Champions League.

"Every season is a pressure when you don't win anything and the newspapers speak about it, the fans gets nervous but we have the chance this year to win the FA Cup so maybe it helps the club, us and the boss,"

"Last season was the same. People and the newspapers speak about the last trophy being 2005 so of course, the pressure is there because we were in the semi-final and we have this chance to win the cup.

"We are now in the final and of course we want the cup, but the other important thing is the league. We don't forget that because we are fifth now, so it's important to get fourth place back.

"But as I say, the important thing is the league as well. We don't forget the league because we are fifth now, we are not qualified for the Champions League, so we must do our work on the pitch - starting on Tuesday and this is an important thing."

Podolski's Stats this season :

  • Appearances14 (6)
  • Goals8
  • Assists2
  •

Arsenal defeated Wigan on penalties in the FA Cup Semi Finals with Fabinaki playing a vital part in saving Wigan penalties and the keeper now wants a run in the team.

"I'm very happy we managed to go through to the final, it's a massive thing for us, especially after such a difficult game," as he spoke to the Daily Mail

"But I don't know if I'll keep my place - it's up to the boss. After my performance, I hope I can."

"To be honest, I did some homework but none of them were on my list, the guys who stepped up," he added.
"So I was just guessing, it was more intuition rather than my homework. I was surprised Gomez didn't step up as the first one."
